Given:

The age of the man is twice the sum of the ages of his two children.

To find:

The present age of the man.

Solution

x = 2(u + v) equation (1)

After 20 years,

A man's age will be = x + 20

The age of his children v will be = v + 20

The age of his children u will be = u + 20

A man's age will be equal to the sum of the ages of his children at that time.

x + 20 = (u + 20) + (v + 20)

x + 20 = u + v + 40

x - 20 = u + v equation (2)

From equation (1) and equation (2) find the value of x.

 \sf \: x = 2(u + v) \\  \sf \: u + v =  \frac{x}{2}

Putting the value in equation (3)

 \sf \: x - 20 = u + v \\ \sf x - 20 =  \frac{x}{2}  \\ \sf 2(x - 20) = x \\ \sf 2x - 40 = x \\  \sf \: 2x - x = 40 \\ \sf  x = 40

 \boxed{ \purple{ \sf \therefore \: The \:  present  \: age \:  of \:  a \:  man  \: is \:  40.}}
