so, at present
x=3y
8yrs ago
father's age=x-8
sons age=y-8
so, x-8=5(y-8)
x-8=5y-40

now substituting the value of x=3y
3y-8=5y-40
3y-5y=-40+8
-2y=-32
y=32/2=16

x=3y
x=3*16
x=48

so, present age of father is 48yrs and son is 16yrs
