Son's present age = x

Father's present age = x + 40

after 5 years

Son's age = x + 5

Father's age = x + 40 + 5 = 3{x + 5}

                                         = 3x + 15

x + 45 = 3x + 15

45 - 15 = 3x - x

30 = 2x

x = 30/2

  = 15

x + 40 = 15 + 40 = 55

So, son's present age = 15 and father's present age = 55
