Answer: Son is 15 and father is 55.

To solve this problem, find a suitable age that is three times older or younger than the other one, depending on which age you want to find first.

Then, you get the difference and it must be 40 years.

Assume b is the son’s age after 5 years.

The father’s age will be 3b.

3b - b = 40

2b = 40

b = 20

After 5 years, son will be 20 and the father will be 60.

You subtract each age with 5 and you will get their present ages.

Son’s present age = 20 - 5 = 15

Father’s present age = 60 - 5 = 55
