Then, x = y+40
= x - y = 40 ..........(1)
Also, x+5 = 3*(y+5)
x + 5 = 3y + 15
x - 3y = 10 ........(2)
On doing (1) - (2)
We get,

y = 30/2
y = 15.
Put this value in eq (1)...
x - 15 = 40
x = 40 +15
x = 55.
Therefore, the father's age is 55 years and the son's age is 15 years.
