first of all the fathers age should be a multiple of 3 as fathers age is thrice the age of his son

fathers age = 40 + x

son age = (40 + x ) / 3

we will check x by taking a multiple of 3

so we will take x=20

= 40 + 20= 60

fathers age is 60

son age = 60 / 3  = 20

               hope it helps
