Let the sum of the ages of his two children be x years

So the age of the father = 2x years

After 20 years father's age = (2x + 20) years

After 20 years sum of his sons ages = x + 20 + 20 = (x + 40) years

According to the question :

2x + 20 = x + 40

2x - x = 40 - 20

x = 20

Father's age = 2x = 2(20) = 40 years
