Let the age of his father be ‘x' years

Let the age of his son be ‘y' years

Father is thrice of his son x = 3y

Some of their ages is 48

x + y = 48

.

Substituting the value of x as 3y

3y + y = 48

4y = 48

y =\dfrac{ 48}{4} =12

x = 3y

x = 3 × 12 = 36

Therefore, Son's age is 12 years & father's age is 36 years.
