Step-by-step explanation:

Assume that the age of A be x and B be y.

The ages of A and B differ by 16 years.

→ x - y = 16

→ x = 16 + y ...........(1)

Also said that, 6 years ago, the elder one be 3 times as old as the younger one.

6 years ago:

  • Age of A = (x - 6) years
  • Age of B = (y - 6) years

As per given condition,

→ (x - 6) = 3(y - 6)

→ x - 6 = 3y - 18

→ 16 + y - 6 = 3y - 18

→ 10 + y = 3y - 18

→ 3y - y = 18 + 10

→ 2y = 28

→ y = 14

Substitute value of y in (1)

→ x = 16 + 14

→ x = 30

Therefore,

  • Age of A = x = 30 years
  • Age of B = y = 14 years

Hence, the age of A is 30 years.
