Given :

The ages of Varma and Vishnu are in the ratio 5:7. Four years from now, the ratio of their ages will be 3:4.

To find :

  • Present ages

Solution :

★ Let the present age be x

  • First condition

The ages of Varma and Vishnu are in the ratio 5:7.

★ Varma's present age = 5x

★ Vishnu's present age = 7x

  • Second condition

Four years from now, the ratio of their ages will be 3:4.

  • After four year

★ Varma's age = 5x + 4

★ Vishnu's age = 7x + 4

  • As per given condition

→ 5x + 4/7x + 4 = 3/4

  • Cross multiplication

→ 4(5x + 4) = 3(7x + 4)

→ 20x + 16 = 21x + 12

→ 16 - 12 = 21x - 20x

→ x = 4

  • Present ages

→ Varma = 5x = 5*4 = 20 years

→ Vishnu = 7x = 7*4 = 28 years
