According to question we have given;

Ages of X and Y in the ratio 3 : 1

Let present age of X be 3a

and present age Y be a.

After 15 years...

Age of X = 3a + 15

And age of Y = a + 15

Ratio of X and Y after 15 years = 2 : 1

\dfrac{3x\:+\:15}{x\:+\:15} = \dfrac{2}{1}

Cross-multiply them

1 (3a + 15) = 2 (a + 15)

3a + 15 = 2a + 30

3a - 2a = 30 - 15

\boxed{a\: = \:15}

\textbf{Present age of X = 3a}

= \textbf{3 (15)}

= \textbf{45 years}

\textbf{Present age of Y = a}

= \textbf{15 years}
