Around 60–70%% of Indian population (directly or indirectly ) depends upon Agriculture sector and currently it contributes to 16–17% of the GDP. However, more important questions should be :
1. Why there is low productivity in Indian agricultural sector ( 50% workforce and just 16% GDP)?
2. Why the contribution of agriculture has reduced significantly in total GDP over the years (50 % in 1951 to 16% of GDP today) ?
Let me share with you some facts and go through some concepts to answer these questions:
Gross Domestic Product (GDP): Is summation of all the products and services produced in a country in a particular time period, usually taken as One Year. It comprises of:
1. Agriculture sector
2. Services sector
3. Industry and
4. Import/Export
Fact 1: The share of agriculture in India’s GDP has steadily declined since 1950, which used to be little over 52% and now stands close to 16–17%. In comparison the % of other two sectors in GDP ( Industry and Services) now stands close to 20+% and 55+% respectively. In 1950, the GDP of India was around 40 Bn USD which reached to roughly 900 Bn USD in 2015. So, Agricultural sectors increased from 20.5 Bn USD to 150+ Bn USD between 1950 and 2016.
Fact 2: Employment in the agriculture Sector as Share of total workforce is around 50% out of around 500 million workers in India. In 1951,population engaged in agriculture were around 100 million out of 140 million working population.
Conclusion 1: The productivity in Agriculture Vs Productivity in Manufacturing/Services
The above two facts clearly shows that the value add per Workforce in Agriculture sector has increased in the last 60 years: by a factor of 3. However, where they loose out is that, the same ratio for Manufacture and services combined stands at 6.4.
That is one reason why the % share of Agriculture has reduced from almost half to one sixth of GDP.
This phenomena is not restricted to India and has been observed through out the world .The ratio of Agriculture in world GDP has come down from around 8 % in 1996 to 3.8% in 2014.
