Given info : The airplane shown is in level flight at an altitude of 0.5 km and a speed of 150 km/h.

To find : at what distance d should it release a heavy bomb to hit the target X ?

solution : it is based on the horizontal projectile motion.

using the trajectory of the horizontal projectile motion, y=\frac{gx^2}{2u^2}

here, g = acceleration due to gravity = 10 m/s²

x = horizontal distance between the airplane and the target = d

u = initial speed of airplane = 150 km/h = 150 × 5/18 = 41.67 m/s

y = height of the airplane from the ground = 0.5 km = 500m

now, 500 m = \frac{10m/s^2\times d^2}{2(41.67m/s)^2}

⇒ 500 × 2 × (41.67)²/10 = d²

⇒ d = 10 × 41.67 = 416.7 m

therefore the airplane should release the bomb to hit the target X is 416.7 m distance from the target.
