Let the base be X
Then altitude = 5/3 X
New altitude = (5X+12)/3
New base = X-3
:-) 5X^2/6= (5X^2-3X -36)/6
:-) 3X=36
:-) X=12
Hence,base is 12cm and altitude is 20cm

An altitude of a triangle is five-thirds the length of its corresponding base. If the altitude be increased by 4cm and the base decreased by 2cm, the area of the triangle remains the same. Find the base and the altitude of the triangle.
