The amount of light that passes through an object depends on the material with which it is made. Based on this property, materials are classified as transparent, translucent and opaque.

¶ The property based on which the materials are classified as transparent translucent and opaque is called 'Transparency'.

∆ Transparency :-

Something transparent, especially a picture, design, or the like on glass or some translucent substance, made visible by light shining through from behind.

• Cause of Transparency - The amount of light that passes and the material with which it is made.

° On the basis of transparency, objects are classified as :-

(a) Transparent.

(b) Translucent.

(c) Opaque.

∆ Transparent Objects :-

When light encounters transparent materials, almost all of it passes directly through them.

Glass, Water and Air are some examples.

∆ Translucent Objects :-

When light strikes translucent materials, only some of the light passes through them.

Frosted glass, Wax paper, Butter paper and Smoke are some examples.

∆ Opaque objects :-

An opaque object is something that allows no light through it.

Concrete, wood, and metal are some examples.

Note - Some materials can be opaque to light, but not to other types of electromagnetic waves.
