Promotion of green gram (moong) cultivation as third crop in two districts in Madhya Pradesh has not only increased acreage under the crop, but also raised income of farmers and enhanced soil nutrients for next crop.

Farmers in the two districts of Hoshangabad and Harda, who otherwise used to keep their farm land idle during March-April period, have sown moong as third crop taking subsidy advantage given on farm inputs under the National Food Security Mission.

According to official data, moong production from these two districts is estimated to increase by more than three-fold to 1.18 lakh tonnes in 2012-13 from 34,320 tonnes last year.

“Here, moong is normally grown in kharif season during monsoon. As yields were less in Kharif, farmers for the first time were encouraged to grow moong as summer crop in March-April. Farmers are expecting better yeilds and income,” Hoshangabad Collector Rahul Jain told visiting reporters.
