The analysis of an organic compound showed that it contains 0.175 mol C, 0.140 mol H, and 0.035 mol N. Its molecular is about 160 g/mol. What is the subscript on in the chemical formula?

work out the whole number ratio C : H : N in the compound.

This is the empirical formula

C : H : N

0.0700 : 0.175 : 0.0350

divide each number by the smallest number in the ratio

0.0700 / 0.0350 : 0.175 / 0.0350 : 0.0350 / 0.0350

2 : 5 : 1

empirical formula

C2H5N

So there are 2 C atoms in the empirical formula

To work out the molecular formula divide the molecular mass by the mass of the empirical formula

mass empirical formula = 2 x 12.01 + 5 x 1.008 + 14.01 = 43.0 amu

86 / 43 = 2

so molecular formula = 2 x empirical formula

= C4H10N2

There are 4 C atoms in 1 molecule.
