There are both literary and archeological evidences which shows the ancestors of Shungas originated from Ujjain and ruled it.
The Shungas ruled Magadha after the fall of Mauryas. Pushyamitra Shunga established Shunga rule in Magadha. It is said he was the viceroy of Ujjain under the Mauryans. He killed last Mauryan king and established Shunga dynasty in Magadha.
