The poem, ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ by S.T. Coleridge depicts the spiritual journey of the old mariner in several elements of supernaturalism. ‘Supernaturalism’ means anything that cannot be explained by natural or physical law; also meaning a world of ghosts, spirits, apparitions and other mysterious forces. The looks of the ‘ancient mariner’ bear a testimony to this aspect. He appears like a person possessed by spirits as he has ‘glittering eyes’. Without any rhyme or reason, he gets ahold of the wedding guest and starts narrating his story. Then, there appears from nowhere the albatross which is hailed as a “christian soul” as it appears to give sense of hope to the sailors. Since the poem takes a major turn and the mariner shoots down the albatross, the spirit from “the land of mist and snow” torments them when they are stranded in the middle of the sea. Their mouths are parched; even though they’re surrounded by water, they don’t have a drop to drink. The sailors blame the mariner for killing the “good omen” and is forced into hanging the dead albatross around his neck to express his deep regret. The albatross weighs him down with heavy remorse. The rotting sea is still, and slimy and strange creatures crawl about the surface of the sea. They see death racing towards them as the color of the sea appears as “death-fires” and “witch’s oil”. They have no choice but to greet their approaching death, except for the repenting mariner, who is supposedly cursed to narrate this horrid story to every passerby he stumbles upon. Thus, several supernatural as well as spiritual elements are expressed throughout the entirety of this narrative poem, which represents the mariner’s horrid journey of repentance and helplessness.
