Kalhana took the "Harsacarita and the Brihatsamhita" chronicles as the model work for his own writing, known as Rajatarangini. There were other sources including the royal chronicles, and previous works on Kashmir such as "Nilamatapurana, Parthivavli and the Nripavali".

Rajatarangini (historical chronicle) is written by a Brahman known as Kalahan in 1148. It comprises the history of Kashmir from its early dates.
