The Andaman and Nicobar group of islands lie in Bay of Bengal to the southeast of the mainland. These islands run like a long and narrow arc in the north-south direction. These islands are located at a distance of about 900 km. There are 573 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar group covering a large are of 8249 sq. km. The southernmost island is Great Nicobar which is only about 150 km away from the nothernmost tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The southern point of the Indian Union is the Indira Point located in the Great Nicobar Island.
