The annex residents lived a life of compromises by not only adjusting to each other but also the restrictions that had to be imposed in order to live in hiding from the Nazis. They had to forego their small comforts, give up the freedom of being outdoors, not even look outside through the window during daytime, live with each other in cramped quarters and hold their tongue even if they didn't like something. The two families and Dr Dussel lived in seclusion from the rest of the world in order to save themselves from the clutches of the Nazis and this meant being cooped up in the annex, sharing rooms and lives, making do with whatever little was available to them, depend upon other people's generosity. For instance, Anne had to share her room with Dr Dussel which meant no privacy for her, these compromises were necessary in order to live with each other and for the greater cause of saving themselves from extermination. Division of labour and adjustment were the orders of the day and maintaining decorum of utmost importance because their existence in the annex had to be kept secret at all costs. This meant restricted access and activity.

Answer:

The Franks, shifted to the secret annexe after the call-up notice. No one was happy there as there were many restrictions imposed on them. It was as if they were imprisoned in it. They could not go out, they had to restrict themselves to having potatoes at every meal because of the shortage of bread. Food was rationed just as it is in prison. The secret annexe limited Anne’s contact with the outside world . She could not go to school or meet her friends. It restricted her experience and exposure. In fact, it became her whole life. Since she didn’t have anyone in whom she could confide, she remained quiet most of the time she didn’t talk to her mother or sister much. Moreover they were deprived of basic proper facilities like they were not allowed regular baths, they couldn’t do anything which pointed towards someone living in the annexe. All this proves that the life in secret annexe restricted her life. It was almost a prison for her.....
