The Annexe was almost a prison for Anne. How did it limit her life?
Answers
The annex residents lived a life of compromises by not only adjusting to each other but also the restrictions that had to be imposed in order to live in hiding from the Nazis. They had to forego their small comforts, give up the freedom of being outdoors, not even look outside through the window during daytime, live with each other in cramped quarters and hold their tongue even if they didn't like something. The two families and Dr Dussel lived in seclusion from the rest of the world in order to save themselves from the clutches of the Nazis and this meant being cooped up in the annex, sharing rooms and lives, making do with whatever little was available to them, depend upon other people's generosity. For instance, Anne had to share her room with Dr Dussel which meant no privacy for her, these compromises were necessary in order to live with each other and for the greater cause of saving themselves from extermination. Division of labour and adjustment were the orders of the day and maintaining decorum of utmost importance because their existence in the annex had to be kept secret at all costs. This meant restricted access and activity.
