The anodes of carbon have to be changed in refining of aluminium.Give reasons for the given phenomena.

◆ Carbon anodes have to be changed in aluminium refining because -

  • In refining of aluminium from Alumina, Al metal is deposited at cathode and O2 gas is liberated at anode.
  • O2 gas liberated at anode reacts with carbon. This slows down the refining process.
  • Therefore, carbon anodes have to be changed periodically in aluminium refining.
