Every State Government appoints a Chief Public Prosecutor to try criminal cases on behalf of the Government against accused at various courts.

The Chief Public Prosecutor oversees the Office of the Public Prosecutor which has a number of advocates working for them such as :

(i) Assistant Public Prosecutors - Appointed by the State Government, Non Gazetted Officers, Lowest of cases such as Small time crimes at Magistrate Courts

(ii) Additional Public Prosecutors - Senior Prosecutors, Appointed by State Government amoung Lawyers who have had at least 10 years of Legal Career at High Court Level. Try cases in Sessions Courts and defend criminal appeals in High Courts. APPs who defend cases in High Courts are also called - High Court Government Pleaders (HCGP). Gazetted Officers.

(iii) Special Public Prosecutors - Top Criminal Lawyers engaged by the State Government or Central Government or Law enforcement agencies for special cases. Engaged usually for a single case only or to try very serious crimes
