The Arabic name Rub al Khali means 'empty quarter'. The name was given to
the Arabian Desert because it is a vast stretch of unbroken sand desert that has
bested kings, adventurers and nomads for thousands of years. In a region defined
by deserts, the Rub al Khali came to be known for being especially daunting and
inhospitable. Not surprising then, it has attracted thousands of adventurous
travellers who want to experience a real natural wonder. The place is both the
world's largest sand sea and one of the hottest places on earth. It is entirely
uninhabitable. Only some of the desert-adapted species survive in this extreme
environment, which features everything from red dunes to deadly quicksand. The
climate is extremely dry, and temperatures oscillate between extreme heat and
seasonal night-time freezes. While traders have made the trek across this desert in
search of riches throughout history, the vast desert has still escaped any permanent
human presence. The desert is, ironically, an oasis of nature in a world dominated
by concrete and modernity. Although the region includes a few towns, not many
people live in the 'empty quarter' because of the intense heat and scarce water,
Bedouins are the nomads of the Middle East. Bedouin' is an Arabic word that
means 'desert dweller'. These people are disdainful of any kind of settled life. They
generally live in tents so they can move easily. Bedouins, with their camels, struggle
to cope with desolation and isolation, gale-force winds, sandstorms and only
occasional rainfall as they are the true desert dwellers who traverse these sands.
