The princely states of India were nominally sovereign monarchy under an Indian prince or ruler but in friendly relationship with the British India. The major ones were the princely states of Baroda, Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, Mysore, Gwalior. Sikkim was a protectorate of the Britain ruled by a King or Chogyal. In 1975 it became a part of India. There were a total of 565 princely states at the time of Indian independence.
