Given : The area of the triangle formed by the line x/3+y/k=1 and the coordinate axes is 6 square units.

To Find : The value of k – 8

Solution:

Area of triangle formed by a line

x/a  + y/b  = 1    with coordinates axes is given by

(1/2) | ab|

x/3+y/k=1

=> a = 3  ,  b = k

Area = (1/2) | 3 k |

(1/2) | 3 k | = 6

=> | k |  = 4

=>  k = ± 4

4 - 8 = - 4   and  - 4 - 8 = - 12

Hence  k - 8  =  - 4  or  - 12

Answer:

Area of triangle formed by a line

x/a + y/b = 1 by with coordinates axes is given

(1/2) | abl

x/3+y/k=1

=> a = 3, b = k Area = (1/2) | 3 kl

(1/2) | 3 kl = 6

=> |k| = 4

=> k = ± 4

4-8-4 and 4-8 = - 12

Hence k - 8 = -4 or - 12.
