❖▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ஜ۩۞۩ஜ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬❖

Explanation:

General

The Himalayan Mountain Range is the most prominent feature on the physical map of India.

The outer hill ranges (sub-13Himalayas or Foothills) of the Himalayas extending over a distance of more than 1500 km from Jammu in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east separate Indo-Ganga plain in the south from the mighty Himalayan mountain ranges in the north.

Geological surveys of the Foothills were conducted by geologists from Geological Survey of India (GSI): Medlicott (1864), Oldham (1883), Wadia, (1928), Auden (1934). Subsequently Oil and Gas commission (ONGC) since its inception in 1956, initiated geological surveys followed by drilling of exploratory wells in this basin.

Basin Category

Prospective (Category III); the basin has indicated hydrocarbon shows that are considered geologically prospective (figure 3)

Basin Area

The total area of the basin is about 30,300 sq. km.

Age of the Basin & Sediment-thickness

The Himalayan Foreland is an area in which sequences of the order of 10 km thickness have accumulated. The oldest of these sequences date back to the Palaeocene-Eocene time.

The Himalayan Foreland is the product of tectonic processes that have been taking place in the orogenic belt in the Cenozoic Era.

Deformation and sedimentation are both active processes in the Himalayan Foreland.

The Himalayan foreland is the area where gravel and Pebble sediment deposited at the foot of Himalaya.

Explanation:

  • The outer slopes of the Himalayas (sub-13 Himalayas or Foothills) extend over a distance of more than 1500 km from Jammu in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the eastern, separate Indo-Ganga plain in the south from the mighty northern Himalayan slopes.
  • The Himalayan Foreland is a region that has developed series of the order of 10 km thick. The earliest of these series is from the beginning of the Palaeocene-Eocene.
  • It is the product of 'tectonic processes' that took place in the Cenozoic Era's orogenic belt. Deformation and sedimentation in the Himalayan Foreland are both active processes.
