The areas of cross section of the pump plunger and the press plunger of a hydraulic press are 0.04 m2 and
16 m2 respectively.
a. Calculate the force acting on the pump plunger of the hydraulic press which overcomes a load of 1000 kgf.
b. If the mechanical advantage of the handle is 10, calculate the force applied at the end of pump plunger.

Explanation:

Load= 1000 kgf

Area of cross section of the press plunger =a = 16 m2

Area of cross - section of the pump plunger =a ' = 0.04 m2

By Pascal's law,

Pressure exerted by pump plunger = pressure exerted on press plunger.

  L / E =  a / a'

      1000 / E = 16/ 0.04

        E = 2.5 kgf

Force applied at the ends of the pump plunger = 2.5 /10 = 0.25 kgf
