The army had to be sent into the Golden Temple in Amritsar to bring out the Sikh militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale and his group that were hiding inside the building. As a result, firing took place inside the premises of the holy buiding that was considered to be a holy place to the Sikhs.
When the then Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi asked Lt. Gen. S K Sinha to make plans for the assault, he advised her against it and asked her to consider another alternative. This led to him being replaced by Gen. Arun Shridhar Vaidya, who then undertook the operation with assistance from Lt. Gen. Sundarji.
Known as Operation Blue Star, this movement did not go well with the Sikhs and the Prime Minister ended up earning the wrath of this community.
