The pathos of loneliness is omnipresent in the story ‘The Letter’. Coachman Ali is a forlorn and lonely man having no family. The elopement of his only beloved daughter, Miriam made him more woebegone. The very beginning of the story describes the loneliness of Ali: ‘In the grey sky of early dawn stars still glowed, as happy memories light up a life that is nearing its close. An old man was walking through the town…’ Ali walking alone to the post office presents a very forlorn image. Even at the end of the story, the postmaster and postman Laxmi Das going to keep Miriam’s letter on Ali’s grave presents a very sorry picture. The most forlorn image is the event of Ali dying without receiving Miriam’s letter.
Apart from Ali’s loneliness, the reader also comes across the postmaster’s loneliness. The ending scene also ends in atmosphere of loneliness when the postmaster is waiting alone for a letter from his sick daughter in the silence and darkness of night.Similar questions
