Since Atomic Number of any specimen is equal to number of protons.
Hence Z = Number of protons .. Eq 1.
And
Mass Number is equal to sum of protons and neutrons (Number of nucleons in nucleus).
Hence A = Number of protons + Number of neutrons.. Eq 2.
Put eq 1 in eq 2.
=) A = Z + Number of neutrons
=) A- Z = Number of neutrons..
