Answer:

The atomic number is 17 . Element is chlorine

configuration is ( 2,8,7)

No.of valence electrons = 7

valency = 8 - 7 = 1

Given:

Atomic Number of an element "X" = 17

we know that

Atomic number = No. of protons or No. of electrons.

so the no. of electrons are 17.

So let's start the distribution of the electrons in the shells or orbits.

  • So In k shell = 2 electrons
  • L shell = 8 electrons
  • M shell = 7 electrons

So in the outermost shell it has 7 electrons but to get stability it should satisfy octect rule.

so the atom will try to gain one electron without losing 7 electrons.

so it has a valency of 1
