✌️✌️hey mate,

➡️The atomic size decrease in period by increasing the atomic number and increase in the number of valence shell electrons.......

➡️But in the groups the atomic size increases due to the increase in the atomic number and addition of shells ......

As the atomic number increases the number of protons increases which increases the nuclear charge and as we know that proton has almost 2000 times more energy than the neutron therefore the nucleus (proton) tends to pull the negatively charged orbits towards itself..
Or

On increasing atomic number, both proton and neutron number increases but proton has more energy than neutron therefore it pulls the negative charge towards the nucleus
