ANSWER: It was necessary because the doctor had to sew the nose of the author back to its place and for this treatment there is a need for the author to become unconscious and for this he has to be still and breathe in into a mask stuffed with cotton-wool on which a white liquid called Chloroform was poured.
These days treatments are carried out in the hospitals but the author's treatment was done in his house on top of a nursery table.
