the average age of 40 students of a class is 15 years. An 18 year okd student left the class and a new student was admitted. As a result the average age fell to 14.885 years. Find the age of the new student.

then, sum of observations/total no. of observations = average

x/40 = 15

x = 15*40 = 600

so the sum of ages of the students is 600 years

after a student leaving the the school , the sum of ages of the students = (600-18)years = 582 years

let the age of new student who joined the school after leaving of one student be y

then ATP,

(582+y)/40 = 14.885

582 + y = 14.885*40 = 595.4

y = 595.4-582 = 13.4 years or 13 years 5 months and 6 days
