There are 8 members in the family except twins.

Given - Average

Find - Number of family members except twins

Solution - Let the number of members in family except twins be x.

The formula of average to be used in the formula-

Average = sum of the age of all family members ÷ total number of family members

Before twins were born -

35 = Sum ÷ x

Sum = 35x

After twins were born -

Sum of the age of all family members = Sum + 10×x (Age of newborn will be less than 1, so will not be included)

Sum of the age of all family members = 35x + 10x

Sum of the age of all family members = 45x

Total number of family members = x + 2

36 = 45x ÷ (x + 2)

36 (x + 2) = 45x

36x + 72 = 45x

72 = 45x - 36x

72 = 9x

x =

 \frac{72}{9}

x = 8

Thus, there are 8 family members except twins.
