average = sum/ total number of given quantity

45.5 = sum/6

sum = 6*45.5 = 273

now,

new average = 47 = (sum + age of relative)/ total quantity

47 = (273+x)/7

273+x = 329

x = 56

The age of relative is 56 years

Given :

  • The average age of 6 members of a family is 45.5 years.

  • If the age of a relative is also added, then new average becomes 47.

To find :

The age of relative

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Find the total age of 6 members

Here it is given that the average age of 6 members of a family is 45.5 years.

Total age of 6 members

= 6 × 45.5 years

= 273 years

Step 2 of 3 :

Find total age of 6 members and relative

It is given that if the age of a relative is also added, then new average becomes 47.

Now total number of persons = 6 + 1 = 7

The total age of 6 members and relative

= 47 × 7 years

= 329 years

Step 3 of 3 :

Find age of relative

Hence the age of relative

= 329 years - 273 years

= 56 years
