Step-by-step explanation:

Average marks = Total marks/No of students

12 = Total marks / 45

Total marks = 540

Let passed student = P and failed student be F

Average marks of Passed = No of marks/P

No of marks of passed = 14P

Similarly, No of marks of failed = 5F

14P+5F = 540 ---(1)

P+F = 45 ---(2) × 5

5P + 5F = 225 ---(3)

Subtracting eq (3) from (1)

14P+5F = 540

-5P-5F = -225

9P = 315

P = 35

Putting P in eq (2)

F = 45-P

F = 10

No of students passed = 35

No of students failed = 10
