The average of 9 consecutive numbers is 40 .Find the largest number .

=> Let the smallest number be x

=> So the numbers are

x, x+1, x+2, x+3, x+4, x+5, x+6, x+7, x+8

=> Sum of the numbers = 9x + 36

=> Average = Sum/9 = 9(x+4)/9 = x+4

By problem

=> Average = 40

=> x+ 4 = 40

=> x = 40-4 = 36

So the largest number is

=> x +8 = 36 +8 = 44 ____(answer)

Let the smallest no. be x

sum of the no. = 9x + 36

Average
 = \frac{sum}{9} \: = \: \frac{9(x + 4)}{9} \: = \: x + 4

Hence,

» Average = 40

» x + 4 = 40

» x = 40 - 4 = 36

Therefore, the largest number is..

» x + 8 = 36

» 36 + 8 = 44
