So,

    Let the five events be x1 , x2, x3, x4, x5 .

As per question,

average of five events is 40,

$\frac{x1+x2+x3+x4+x5}{5} =40\\\\x1+x2+x3+x4+x5=5*40\\\\x1+x2+x3+x4+x5=200$............(i)

average of first 2 events is 70,

$\frac{x1+x2}{2} =70\\\\x1+x2 = 2*70\\\\x1+x2 = 140$............(ii)
