Answer:

x3=(-70)

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that,

                 the average of five events = 40

                 the average of the first 2 events = 70

                  the average of next two events = 65

To find next third number .

So,

    Let the five events be x1 , x2, x3, x4, x5 .

As per question,

average of five events is 40,

\frac{x1+x2+x3+x4+x5}{5} =40\\\\x1+x2+x3+x4+x5=5*40\\\\x1+x2+x3+x4+x5=200............(i)

average of first 2 events is 70,

\frac{x1+x2}{2} =70\\\\x1+x2 = 2*70\\\\x1+x2 = 140............(ii)

average of next two events is 65,

\frac{x3+x4}{2}=65\\ \\x3+x4 = 2*65\\\\x3+x4=130 ..........(iii)

By using the equation (i) , (ii) and (iii), we get

\frac{x1+x2+x3+x4+x5}{5}=40\\ \\\frac{140+x3+130}{5} = 40\\ \\140+x3+130 = 5*40\\\\x3 + 270 = 200\\\\x3 = 200 - 270\\\\x3 = -70

Therefore, the third number x3 = (-70)
