The average of 5 numbers is 9 and the average of the last three numbers is 5. What is the average of the first two numbers?

Let the five nos. be a, b, c, d and e.

Given,

(a+b+c+d+e)/5=9

So,

=>a+b+c+d+e=5×9=45

Also given,

(c+d+e)/3=5

So,

=>c+d+e=5×3=15

So,

=>a+b+15=45

=>a+b=45–15=30

Now,

=(a+b)/2

=30/2

=15

Hence, the average of first two numbers is 15
