Answer: 6 is the increase in the average.

Step-by-step explanation: The average of points scored by a group of participants in a competition is 35.

Due to a correction, if 8 more points were awarded to half of the participants, 6 more points were awarded to one half of the remaining, and 2 more points were awarded to the other half,

So now the increase in the average is

total new marks

\frac{n}{2} (35+8)+\frac{n}{4} (35+6)+\frac{n}{4}(35+2)\\\\

=\frac{43}{2}n +\frac{41}{4}n +\frac{37}{4} n\\=\frac{(86+41+37)}{4}n\\ =\frac{164}{4} n\\=41n

So now the new average is =\frac{41n}{n} =41

As the increase in the average is =41-35=6.

Hence, 6 is the increase in the average.
