SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • The average of six numbers is 9

  • The average of first five of these numbers is 8

TO DETERMINE

The sixth number

EVALUATION

Here it is given that the average of six numbers is 9

∴ Sum of six numbers

= 6 × 9

= 54

Now the average of first five of these numbers is 8

∴ Sum of first five of these numbers

= 5 × 8

= 40

Hence the required sixth number

= Sum of six numbers - Sum of first five of these numbers

= 54 - 40

= 14
