Given - The average of the four successive odd numbers 34.

Find - The value of the smallest of these numbers.

Solution - Let the very first odd number be X. So the next three successive odd numbers will be X+2, X+4 and X+6 respectively.

As per the question average of these successive odd numbers is 34. Therefore, (X + X + 2 + X + 4 + X + 6)/4 = 34.

Solving the equation-

(4x + 12)/4= 34

4x + 12 = 34*4

4x + 12 = 136

4x = 136 - 12

4x = 124

X = 124/4

X = 31.

So the numbers are - X = 31, X + 2 = 33, x + 4 = 35 and X + 6 = 37.

Hence, the value of smallest number in given numbers is 31.

SOLUTION

GIVEN

The average of the four successive odd numbers is 34.

TO DETERMINE

The value of the smallest of these numbers

CONCEPT TO BE IMPLEMENTED

A odd integer is of the form 2n - 1

EVALUATION

Let the four successive odd numbers are

2x - 1 , 2x + 1 , 2x + 3 , 2x + 5

Now sum of the four successive odd numbers

= 2x - 1 + 2x + 1 + 2x + 3 + 2x + 5

= 8x + 8

Again it is given that the average of the four successive odd numbers is 34

So sum of the numbers = 4 × 34 = 136

So by the given condition

8x + 8 = 136

 \implies \sf{8x = 128}

 \implies \sf{x = 16}

So the four successive odd numbers are 31 , 33 , 35 , 37

Hence the required smallest number = 31
