average of 20 paint brushes is $15

so, total price of 20 paint brushes = no of brush × average price = 20 × $15 = $300

or, total price of 18 paint brushes + sum of price of two brushes = $ 300......(1)

again, average price of 18 paint brushes = $12

so, total price of 18 paint brushes = 18 × $12 = $216 ......(2)

from equations (1) and (2),

sum of price of two brushes = 300 - 216 = $84......(3)

a/c to question,

price of first brush is 40% more than that of other.

if price of first brush is x

then, price of the other brush is x + 40% of x = 1.4x

now, from equations (3),

x + 1.4x = $84

or, 2.4x = $84

or, x = 35 and 1.4x = 1.4 × 35 = 49

hence, price of first brush is $35 and other is $49

Answer:

Hence price of second brush is =$35

Price of first brush is=1.40 x 35=$49

Step-by-step explanation:

The average price of 20 paint brush is =$15(Given)

The average price of 18 of those is=$12(Given)

Total price of 20 paint brush is=20 x 15=$300

Total price of 18 paint brush is=18 x 12=$216

Total price of remaining two brush is =Total price of 20 brush -total price of 18 brush

Total price of remaining two brush is=$300-$216=$84

Let the price of second brush in the remaining two is=$x

According  to the statement the price of first brush is=$x+$0.40x=$1.40x

According to calculation:

=Total price of remaining two brush is=$84

=Price of first brush+Price of second brush=$84

=$x+$1.40x=$84

=$2.40x=$84

x=\frac{84}{2.40}=35

Hence price of second brush is =$35

Price of first brush is=1.40 x 35=$49
