The average speed of one airplane is 200 mph faster than that of an automobile. If the automobile starts at 3 a.m. and the airplane starts from the same place at 11 a.m., they will have traveled the same number of miles by 1:00 p.m. Find the rate of the automobile.

Airplane starts  at 11 a.m. and finish by 1:00 p.m

Time for airplane = 11 am to 1 pm = 2 hr

Let the speed of the plain be x mph

Distance travelled by plane = 2 *x=2x  ------- (speed of plane is a mph)

The automobile starts at 3 a.m and finish by 1:00 p.m

Time for auto = 3 am to 1 pm = 10 hr

The average speed of one airplane is 200 mph faster than that of an automobile

The speed of the automobile is (x - 200)  mph

Distance travelled by automobile = 10 hr*(x - 200)

2x = 10(a - 200)

8x = 2000

x = 250 mph ----- speed of the plane

and 250 - 200 = 50 mph ----- speed of the auto
