The name of the ancient Aztec capital where Mexico City stands today is known as Tenochtitlan.

Tenochtitlan was founded by Aztecs in 1325 in the midst of marshes in Lake Texcoco. It was the most prominent city-state of the Aztec Triple Alliance, the other two places being Texcoco and Tlacopan. During its golden days, Tenochtitlan was home to various buildings such as palaces, temples, residences of prominent people and a very big ceremonial center.
