The balkan consist of modern day Romania, balgeria, albenia, Greece, Croatia, Serbia....The inhabitants were broadly know as Slavs.

when the automan empire collapsed, it initiated Nationalism in the balcony states.

A large part of the Balkans were under the control of the automan empire.

The spread of idea's of romantic nationalism and disintegration of the automan empire created problems in this region.

Gradually European nations got seperated and fought for independence and political rights.

one by one they declared themselves as independent.

The Balkans were jealous of each other and wanted to gain other territories.

European powers like Russia, Germany, England and Austria Hungary tried to gain power over the region.

these all factors lead to a series of war and finally the 1st world war.

hope this can help
